My Life as a Communication Major

I am a sophomore at South, majoring in Strategic Communication. One of the best things about my major is that the field is always changing, so the classes are always evolving to adapt to the new landscape. For example, in CA 260, students now create their own websites! Every year, the department offers something new for the next generation of Communication majors.

Another thing that sets the communication department apart from other majors is that we have an entire class dedicated to working an internship. Building real life relationships and knowledge that pertains directly to the workplace is a serious advantage of majoring in communication.

Being an Arts & Science major also means that all communication majors that come in as first time freshmen get the opportunity to be placed in a learning community. Learning communities are just classes that are made up entirely of students with the same type of majors. This helped when it came time to study and make friends with other communication students. A lot of the people I met in that class are still my close friends today.

Majoring in communication also lets students embrace their creativity. Just this week, I have had the opportunity to build a website and plan and present a product's launch! Everything in a communication classroom is hands on so you are constantly gaining real experiences that will help you once you are out of college.

The field of communication is exciting and always changing and growing, just like the communication department at the University of South Alabama.
